Which Course is Right for Me?

In the booklet you refer to "inexperienced" therapists. What do you mean?

Inexperienced therapists are those who are not familiar with the basic bony and muscle anatomy and the terminology used in these courses.

I am a beginning hand therapist—what HandLab courses are best for me?

This is a challenging question for us since we do not know your level of experience/knowledge!  Most of our courses provide a focus on understanding anatomy as a key to understanding pathology and treatment rationale, and new therapists say this approach is valuable. One therapist commented: “I have one year experience in working in a clinic treating only hand pathology. This course addressed my needs to know WHY you do WHAT and WHEN instead of simply following a protocol set out for you.”

I am preparing for the CHT exam—what HandLab courses are best for me?

Therapists have told us HandLab courses help them gain clinical reasoning skills which are vital to passing the exam.  We are unable to identify any one course to specifically help with passing the exam since we do not know the exam content.

I have many years of experience and am not looking for the basics-- what HandLab courses are best for me?

Although HandLab courses review the core knowledge needed for treatment, each course provides current evidence based rationale for treatment. Experienced therapists tell us our courses are a time saver in keeping them up-to-date.  One therapist with 35 years’ experience wrote:  "I am so happy I chose this course… Many thanks! Yes, my skills are going to the clinic in the morning! Wonderful!".

I am a general occupational therapist or physical therapist. What is in this for me?

Ms. Colditz is known for her ability to explain complex subjects in a clear and straightforward, simple manner. Although much of the information may be new to you, it is presented in a logical sequence to facilitate understanding.

Is information in the Self-Study Modules similar to information in the HandLab Online Video Courses?

There is some repetition of information but the Online Video Courses are newer and thus have more updated information.

  2. ********** Review by Angell

I found this course to be very informative, especially the rationale for which muscles to strengthen and which not to achieve dynamic stability. I also have better understanding of neuromuscular control and utilizing it in practice as needed. Last but not least, i have improved understanding of role of orthotic intervention which plays much larger role then just "" protecting the Joint ""

I will re think my treatment strategy for strengthening and applying principles of dynamic stabilization. I will also examine more thoroughly why and how i would do Orthotic intervention to optimize stability and function.

This was my first course and I will definitely do more. I appreciated the honest information. I especially appreciated the information on muscle strengthening and what to isolate and when to strengthen. This course allowed me to have a more comprehensive evaluation of the thumb, and furthered my opinion that every patient is different, and it is crucial to progress each patient based on how they are presenting. Thank you very much for this presentation!

This is a fantastic course that puts together all the challenges of rehabilitating the arthritic thumb and systematically directs treatment to provide optimal outcomes.

I've done so many parts of this with my thumb CMC OA patients but have never put it together quite as well as you have Judy. It is so difficult to find advanced courses when you've been practicing as long as I have been and I really appreciate your attention to detail, your willingness to research the most minute details and your great skill in putting it all together.
